History: Taking their name from the cigar-rolling industry in the Tampa area, the ‘51 Smokers dominated the Class-B Florida International League, winning the league pennant with a record of 90-50. Puerto Rican Carlos Bernier scored 124 runs over the season to lead the league, while pitcher Dale Matthewson posted an impressive 18-5 record.
