Ozzie Smith Hall of Fame T-Shirt
History: Ozzie Smith is best known for his backflips and 15 seasons playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, but he started his Big League career with the San Diego Padres - and he had even been selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 1976 amateur entry draft but couldn’t agree to contract terms and returned to Cal Poly for his senior year. Smith won 13 consecutive Gold Gloves, beginning in 1980 when he recorded 621 assists (a single-season record for a shortstop). Following the 1981 season, an ongoing dispute with Padres ownership culminated in Smith waiving a no-trade clause and moving to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for shortstop Garry Templeton. In his first season with the Cardinals Smith helped the team to become World Series Champions, including starting a rally in the sixth inning of Game 7 on the way to winning 6-3 after trailing 3-1. Smith was a 15-time All-Star, won the Silver Slugger Award in 1987, the Roberto Clemente Award in 1995, and following his retirement in 1996 his number 1 jersey was retired by the Cardinals. He was a first ballot inductee to the Hall of Fame in 2002 with 91.7% of the vote.
