History: Founded in 1844 by Jacob Best, Pabst Blue Ribbon began its life as Best Select in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The name changed to Pabst Select in 1890 when Frederick Best, married to the founder’s granddaughter Maria Best, took control of the brewery. The Pabst Brewing Company (formerly Best Brewing Company) was a major beneficiary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871that wiped out 19 Chicago breweries, positioning Milwaukee as the king among beer-brewing cities. The Pabst Blue Ribbon name comes in part from an 1893 win as “America’s Best” beer at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and in part from the blue ribbon that adorned the neck of their beer bottles from 1882 to 1916.
