Raines spent time with six different clubs as a player and a coach during his career, including the Chicago White Sox where he spent five seasons as a player and later returned as a coach and won a World Series in 2005, and three seasons with the New York Yankees where he won two World Series as a player in 1996 and 1998. Montreal was his first big league team, though, and where he spent most of his career, first playing for the Expos from ’79 to 90 during which time he became a seven-time All-Star, then returning in 2001 following treatment a recovery from lupus. The Expos traded Raines to the Baltimore Orioles in 2001, allowing him to join his son, Tim Raines Jr. On October 4, 2001, with Tim Raines Sr. in left field and Jr. in center, they became the second father-son pair to play for the same MLB team following Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. with the Seattle Mariners.
