History: At Tumwater Falls in the town of Tumwater, Washington, Leopold Schmidt began brewing Olympia Beer in 1896. Although production was halted during Prohibition, the beer went back on sale in 1934 after a new Olympia Brewery was built just up the Deschutes River from the original location. The low-priced beer was widely popular in the region before expanding to nationwide distribution and taking the taste of the Deschutes across the country. As the slogan says, “It’s the Water.”
