History: Joseph Schlitz took over management of a tavern brewery in Milwaukee at which he’d worked as a bookkeeper following the death of owner August Krug in 1856. Schlitz married Krug’s widow Anna Maria two years later, and changed the name of the brewery to the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co. Schlitz Brewing was thriving in the early 1900s, including surpassing Pabst as the largest brewery in the United States by producing a million barrels in 1902. The temperance movement and Prohibition threw a series of wrenches into the machinery, but after the end of Prohibition the company quickly returned to production and became the best-selling brewery in the world in 1934. Although the brand had a decline as time went on, Schlitz remained America’s second-largest brewery into the 1970s on the strength of their namesake beer and other offerings like Old Milwaukee. It truly was “the beer that made Milwaukee famous.”
