History: The Rattlers athletic programs include baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, tennis and track and field, but by far the most successful program is football. Rattlers Football won the Black College National Championship eight times from 1938 to 1961, with head coach Jake Gaither leading the team to six titles between 1950 and 1961. Gaither’s teams produced 42 NFL players, won 22 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, and Gaither was eventually elected to the College Football Hal of Fame in 1975. Today FAMU home football games are played at Bragg Memorial Stadium.
