League: Independent Team
History: Larry Doby was a star with the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League, hitting .301 in 1943. In 1944 Doby joined the service and played on the Black Great Lakes Naval Station team outside Chicago. Although America was fighting Fascism abroad, military baseball – like much else – was still a segregated affair, and there were separate white and Black Great Lakes teams. Doby would go on to integrate the American League in 1947. Truman would integrate the United States military in 1948.
