History: The Independent subway system was conceived by the City of New York Transit as a city-owned system (as opposed to the two privately-owned New York transit systems, the IRT and BMT). The 8th Avenue line of the Independent system opened in 1932. In 1940 the city purchased the other two transit companies and merged them, although the names of the three original systems remain in use today.
