League: Collegiate Baseball

History: 1932 Jaspers teammates Nick Tremark and Buddy "the Bronx Thrush" Hassett were both inducted into the Manhattan College Hall of Fame and both also began their Major League careers with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Tremark played in just 35 games while Hassett had a productive seven year career batting .292. In his rookie season of 1933, Hassett struck out only 17 times in 635 at bats - a Major League rookie record that still stands today. FUN FACT: Manhattan College was playing a semi-pro baseball team called the Metropolitans sometime in the late 19th century when their Head Coach, Brother Jasper, noticed the students attending the game were becoming increasingly restless as the Jaspers came to bat in the seventh inning of a close game. The coach called time out and told the students to stand up and stretch for a few minutes to relieve the tension, and thus the well known baseball tradition of the "seventh inning stretch" was born. Harry Caray would be proud. The Jaspers are members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and currently play their home games at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale section of the Bronx.
