History: The second wave of MLB expansion brought baseball to a new country – Canada – and a new language – French. Although baseball in Canada might have seemed exotic to American fans, Montreal already had a rich minor league history with the Montreal Royals of the International League, a team which brought us stars like Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente. Tiny Jarry Park may not have had many frills but was affectionately adopted by Montreal fans. The team moved into the cavernous Olympic Stadium in 1977, a modern facility, but beset with cost overruns, design, and construction problems. Many fans believe the Expos never recovered after the baseball strike of 1994, when the team had a record of 74-40 – best in the Majors - but lost a chance to go to the World Series when the season was cancelled on August 11th.
