History: The Brooklyn Dodgers signed a teenage Puerto Rican outfielder named Roberto Clemente with a $15,000 bonus and assigned him to their Montreal affiliate in 1954. Mysteriously, the young Clemente received very little playing time. The historical consensus is that Clemente was being “hidden” from other major league scouts because Rule 5 allowed bonus prospects to be drafted by other teams if they were not protected. If the scouts didn’t see him play, he was less likely to draw the interest of other clubs. Ironically it was Branch Rickey – now GM of the Pittsburgh Pirates - who signed Clemente after the 1954 season. Clemente started the season in the outfield for Pittsburgh in 1955, and the rest is history.
