History: Brokenhearted National League fans of New York had lost not one, but two big league teams in 1958, and the pressure put on the National League to replace them finally bore fruit when expansion came in the form of the Mets. In trying to unite the fan bases of the departed teams, the Mets ownership adopted the royal blue from the Dodgers and the orange and “NY” insignia from the Giants. The signing of aging former New York stars and legendary manager Casey Stengel may have won the hearts of Met fans, but the team on filed was mostly legendary for its futility, losing 120 games in 1962, a record which would stand until the White Sox “topped” it in 2024. Although Casey may have christened his club “Amazins” for dubious reasons, in only seven years the lowly Mets would redefine “amazing” when they shocked the baseball world and went all the way in 1969.
