League: Negro National League
History: The Eagles began life playing in Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field in 1935, but moved to Newark the following season. One of the Negro National League’s top clubs, it featured shrewd female management in the form of Effa Manley. The Eagles won the Negro League World Series in 1946. This was the high point for the team, because in 1947 integration began weakening the Negro Leagues as they started to lose top talent to the majors, including Eagles home-grown star Larry Doby, who integrated the American League in 1947 with Cleveland. The Eagles moved to Houston in 1949, and eventually New Orleans, where the club folded in 1951.
