History: Montreal and San Diego won the National League’s approval for its second wave of expansion in 1969, which was also the first year the major leagues split into two divisions. The new San Diego team adopted the name of the old Pacific Coast League club which had played in San Diego since 1937. The Padres chose an unusual (for baseball) color scheme, choosing a brown-and-orange motif, and light tan (“sand”) colored road uniforms instead of the typical travel gray.
