History: The Cardinals are one of baseball’s oldest professional franchises. They began life in 1882 as the St. Louis Brown Stockings. After changing their name to the Browns (not to be confused with the St. Louis Browns of the American League) for several seasons, they became the Perfectos in 1899. The team adopted the Cardinals name in 1900, after the red shade of trim on their uniforms was commented on by St. Louis Reporter sportswriter Willie McHale.
