History: Toronto had a long history in the International League with the Maple Leafs (the name pre-dated use by the NHL hockey team), and had long sought an MLB franchise. The dream was nearly realized in 1976 when Horace Stoneham (the same owner who had moved the Giants from New York to San Francisco) agreed to sell his team to Toronto interests. But the “Toronto Giants” never came to be after a court decision nullified the sale. Instead, the city was granted an expansion franchise in the American League, and the new Blue Jays hit the field in 1977, playing in a reconfigured Exhibition Stadium. After moving into SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) - in 1989, the Jays won their first World Series championship in 1992 and followed it with a second in 1993.
