History: The “Gamecocks” nickname dates back to a reference in The State newspaper in 1900, and was a reference to Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter’s fighting tactics. The name and the garnet and black color scheme gradually came into official use starting not long after that. The Fighting Gamecocks have sent over 50 athletes to the Olympics, and the baseball and women’s basketball teams have each won two team national championships. Under head coach Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks women’s basketball team reached the NCAA Final Four for the first time in 2015 before winning the tournament in 2017 and 2022.
