History: Although officially called the Nationals until 1955, most fans preferred the name Senators for DC’s first (of three) MLB franchises, and the name was officially adopted in 1956. One of the American League’s charter clubs, Washington’s glory days of Walter Johnson and Bucky Harris were far behind it by the mid-fifties. The reputation of the team as losers was not helped by the Broadway hit “Damn Yankees” which opened in 1955. Owner Cal Griffith sold Griffith Stadium to the city and leased it back, fueling speculation that he planned to move the team, which he eventually did (to Minneapolis-St. Paul) in 1961. Washington fans did not miss a beat though, as a new expansion Senators team was hastily created and began play that same year.
