PCL: Pacific Northwest
Of course the Pacific Coast League stretched beyond California, extending up its namesake into the Pacific Northwest. With teams in Portland, Oregon, Seattle Washington and even a Canadian inclusion from Vancouver, B.C., the Pacific Northwest claimed 15 titles between the three teams with the Portland Beavers and Seattle Rainiers accounting for 14 of them.
Featured Teams
Seattle Rainiers
Seattle entered the PCL in 1903, dropped out in 1907, and rejoined in 1919. After experimenting with the names Clamdiggers, Siwashes, and Indians, the team was christened Rainiers after being purchased by brewery magnate Emil Sick in 1938. Sick also built Sicks Stadium – at the time one of the top minor league parks in the country. Seattle’s PCL entry won league titles in 1924, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1951, 1955, and 1966.
Portland Beavers
Portland’s long-running PCL team began play with the rest of the PCL in 1903. Initially named the Browns, then the Giants, and briefly the Ducks, the team has mostly been known as the Beavers, with Lucky Beavers as an alternate name in the mid-1940s. Portland was the last team from the classic era of the league to still exist as recently as 2010, although it was a different franchise by that time. They won seven PCL titles in the period between 1906 and 1957.
Vancouver Mounties
The Oakland Oaks headed north in 1956, and the new Vancouver Mounties became Canada’s highest ranking minor league club. (The Coast League was still classified as “Open”, higher than AAA, for the Mounties’ first two seasons). In their second season in Canada, the Mounties won the pennant and led the league in attendance. The team played at Capilano Stadium, built with the same plans as Seattle’s Sick’s Stadium.
