League: Independent Black Team
History: The Chicago Unions and Columbia Giants merged in 1901 to become the Union Giants. The team played both as an independent club and as members of the Chicago City League, an independent minor circuit which consisted of white as well as Black teams. The Union Giants soon changed their name to the Leland Giants (after owner/manager Frank Leland). Eventually the team became controlled by the great Black baseball pioneer Rube Foster and evolved into the Chicago American Giants.
