History: Although Jackie Robinson broke the Organized baseball color barrier with Montreal in 1946, it was actually fellow-Dodger signee pitcher Don Newcombe who became the first African-American player on a US-based team. Newcombe had starred with the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League and stayed with Nashua until 1947 when he was promoted to Montreal. Newk debuted for Brooklyn on May 20, 1949, and went on to a great career with a lifetime 153-96 record and 3.54 ERA.
