History: The original nickname for Northwestern University sports teams was " the Fighting Methodists." The very first school mascot was a bear cub named Furpaw borrowed from Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo. After a losing season in 1923 the mascot was considered bad luck and was dropped, and the name was changed to the Wildcats in 1924. The current team mascot is Willie the Wildcat, and his first image was seen in 1933. Alpha Delta Phi fraternity brothers brought him to life in a hand sewn costume for the 1947 Homecoming parade. Female versions of the mascot known as Wilhelmina and “Winnie" were seen in the 1960s and 1970s. The student body voted to change the name to "Purple Haze" in 1972, but the name never resonated, and so the Wildcats remain.
