History: Penn State's "Nittany Lion" nickname and mascot date back to the early 1900s. On a trip to Princeton, a Penn State student named H.D. "Joe" Mason was apparently embarrassed that his school didn't have a mascot and bluffed that the school was represented by the Nittany Lion, which could easily outmatch Princeton's Bengal tiger. Named for the subspecies of cougars that once roamed nearby Mount Nittany, all of Penn State's sports teams except for Women's Basketball (known as the Lady Lions) are known as the Nittany Lions.
