History: With the advent of the new polyester knit uniforms in the early 1970s, many teams experimented with new uniform styles and colors. The drab button-down standard gray gave way to a multitude of jersey styles and a plethora of new hues. The Phillies – not to be outdone – abandoned their standard red and went to a burgundy shade as their primary color, with powder blue road uniforms (an all-burgundy uniform alternate uniform slated for 1979 was so reviled by players that it was abandoned after one game). The new look coincided with a general improvement in the team, with Philadelphia winning five division titles and one World Series between 1976 and 1983.
