League: American Basketball League
History: The Sphas were founded and coached by Philadelphia sports entrepreneur Eddie Gottlieb. At a time when the ranks of professional basketball included many great Jewish players, the Sphas were sponsored by the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association. The team played in several leagues, including the American Basketball League. The Sphas rang up seven ABL titles during their time in the league. After their league days were over, the Sphas found new life as one of the regular traveling opponents of Abe Saperstein's Harlem Globetrotters.
