League: Western Hockey League
History: The Seals joined the WHL for the 1961-62 season, adopting the name of San Francisco’s former Pacific Coast League baseball team. They played home games at the Cow Palace, which had to have ice installed to accommodate the new team. The Seals won back-to-back Lester Patrick Cups in 1962 and 1963. In a rare instance of a minor league team “graduating” to the majors, the Seals franchise was added to the NHL in the 1967 expansion, though their home ice was moved to the Oakland Coliseum.
