League: National Baseball Hall of Fame

History: Whitey Ford spent the entirety of his 16-year Big League career as a core part of a dynastic New York Yankees team alongside Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle. He made his Major League Baseball debut in July, 1950 and went on to record a 9-1 record in his rookie year with a 2.81 ERA before starting in Game 4 of the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, a 5-2 win that clinched a sweep for the Yankees. He would miss the ’51 and ’52 seasons as he served in the United States Army during the Korean War, but quickly reestablished himself upon his return in 1953. The “Chairman of the Board” eventually became the dominant number-one as he racked up another five World Series rings to become a six-time champion, 10 All-Star Game appearances, and in 1961 he was both the Cy Young Award winner and World Series MVP. After retiring in 1967, Whitey Ford was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974, in no small part due to the numerous records he set. His 236 wins remains a franchise record for the Yankees, and his 2.75 career ERA remains the third-best among pitchers whose careers started during the live-ball era. Ford still holds World Series records for wins (10), as well as starts (22) and losses (8) for a starting pitcher, and holds the record for consecutive scoreless innings in the World Series with 33. His number 16 was retired by the Yankees.
